Nothing is plumb, square or level

Not in a remodel, and not entirely in new construction. Casing fitted as though the opening were true shows a tapering gap. A run of base cut to a drawing dimension will not close in the corner.

The craft is scribing: measuring the condition in front of you rather than the one on paper. Scribing is slower and cannot be batched off a cut list. Skip it and the joint reads as bought rather than fitted, which is visible from across the room.

Wood moves, and here it moves dry

Timber takes moisture from the air around it, and an interior in the Las Vegas valley is a drying environment. Material installed before it has acclimated shrinks afterwards, which is what opens mitres and cracks paint lines at joints.

So NeXGen has the stock delivered early to sit in the conditioned space, details the joints to allow a little movement, and does the final work once the house is running its own climate.

Reveals and returns

Most of what reads as quality is consistency: the same reveal at every jamb, returns landing the same way at every opening, a profile that dies into adjacent work on purpose instead of stopping.

Consistency gets decided once and then held across hundreds of cuts, by different hands, on different days. Holding it is what supervision is for.
