Outdoor kitchens
An outdoor kitchen is a kitchen with the house taken away. Everything a wall used to hide has to reach it underground, through ground that across much of the Las Vegas valley is caliche.
-
01 Under the patio
Everything arrives
underground.Gas for the grill, a circuit for the fridge and the lights, a water line for the sink and a drain away from it. Each one leaves the house in a trench, and across much of the valley that trench goes through caliche.
-
02 Orientation
Which way it faces
decides July.A grill station facing west takes the full afternoon sun under any cover. Orientation, the depth of the cover and where the cook stands get settled before the slab is poured.
-
03 The island
Stucco over a frame
built for weather. The island is framed in steel, boarded and plastered. The stucco falls under NeXGen’s own C‑17 lath and plaster license, so it matches the house it stands beside.
-
04 Appliances
Rated for outdoors,
or replaced.Indoor appliances in the Las Vegas sun fail in a few summers. Every unit here is outdoor rated, and a grill set into a framed island gets the clearances and jacket its manufacturer specifies.
-
05 Taken apart
Every trade
under one cover.Footings and the cover, gas, electrical and plumbing, then the island, the stone and the appliances. NeXGen holds the contract and the schedule; licensed trade partners do the work, and the handoffs between them are ours to manage.
-
06 Evening
Built for the hours
you use it.In July the grill gets used after sunset, so light over the counter and the table is wired in with the rest of the circuits, from the start.
The services are
most of the work.
Gas, power, water and a drain
A grill needs a gas line sized for it and anything else on the same run. A fridge, lights and the outlets on the counter need circuits, and outdoor receptacles need ground-fault protection. A sink needs a supply and somewhere for the water to go.
Each of those runs out from the house, and a new gas line is permitted and inspected work. Planning the routes together before the patio is poured costs far less than cutting the patio open later.
Caliche
Across much of the valley, caliche sits close enough to the surface that a trench for a gas line meets it. It behaves like soft rock, and it gets priced by what comes out of the ground, which is why NeXGen establishes it early.
Under a cover, the grill sets the rules
A grill under a roof needs the clearances and ventilation its manufacturer specifies, and set into a framed island it may need an insulated jacket. Those requirements decide the height of the cover and the build of the island, so the grill gets chosen before the drawings are finished.
The cover itself is a structure, with footings and a connection to the house. That side of the project is on the covered outdoor rooms page.
Materials that take the sun
Appliances rated for outdoor use, and cabinetry and finishes that take direct sun without chalking. A dark stone counter in full afternoon sun gets hot enough to matter, so lighter stone, porcelain slab or a counter kept in shade are the usual answers.
The island’s stucco is exterior plaster, which is NeXGen’s own C‑17 trade. Matched to the house, it reads as part of the building.

What owners ask
about cooking outside.
Do I need a permit for an outdoor kitchen?
For the gas line, yes, and usually for the electrical and plumbing as well. A roofed cover attached to the house is a structure with its own permit and inspection. The authority depends on your address, which is one of four in this valley.
Can the grill go under the patio cover?
Often, within the clearances and ventilation the grill’s manufacturer specifies. Those requirements decide how high the cover sits over the grill and whether it needs a vent hood, so the grill gets chosen before the cover is drawn.
What countertop works outside in Las Vegas?
One chosen for the sun. A dark stone in full afternoon sun gets hot enough to matter, and some materials fade or chalk. Lighter stone, porcelain slab, or a counter that sits in shade are the usual answers.
Do you remodel indoor kitchens too?
Yes. The kitchen inside the house turns on different questions, usually whether a wall carries load, and it has its own page: kitchen remodels.
